What Sort Of Solar Energy System Do I Need?

After deciding to make the move to solar, many of our customers feel confused by the wealth of information out there and overwhelmed by the choices, what’s involved, and what it costs to move their energy needs to solar.

At Charged Energy, we pride ourselves on providing a transparent, true end-to-end service. That’s why we start at the very beginning – with a conversation to understand your business or household’s unique energy use and habits, before tailoring a solution that will meet your specific energy needs.

What are the different types of solar panels available?

There are three main types of solar panels – mono-crystalline, polycrystalline and thin film technologies – and with advances in technology, you’re likely to have more than one suitable option for your needs. They may all provide solar energy for your premises, but there are some differences in the size, price and energy output.

Without going into too much technical detail, here’s a brief explanation of each of the three main types of solar panels.

Monocrystalline Solar Panels

These types of solar panels are easily recognised by their uniform, dark look and white diamond shapes between the cells. The monocrystalline silicon’s high purity means that they have one of the highest efficiency rates, higher power output, occupy less space and last longest compared to other types of solar panels. As is to be expected, these benefits do come with a price-tag that make them the most expensive of the three.

Polycrystalline Solar Panels

These panels have a blue, speckled look and are made by melting raw silicon, which is a faster and cheaper production process. While it does mean these panels are priced more cost-effectively, they are slightly less efficient and have a shorter lifespan compared to Monocrystalline solar panels.

Thin Film Solar Panels

These are the easiest to produce and made from a variety of materials, making them the cheapest option. They take up a lot more space (nearly double), are markedly less efficient, with a shorter lifespan than the other two options. There are few Thin Film Solar Panels on the market for the Australia residential market anymore due to the superior performance of Monocrystalline and Polycrystalline Solar Panel technology.

Which type of solar panel should I choose then?

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution for solar, despite what the industry or other suppliers may have you believe. A tailored solar solution provides a system that truly meets your energy needs, from your usage to your ability to accommodate a system.

In terms of the technology and what type of solar panel is right for you, the difference in performance between Monocrystalline and Polycrystalline technology is minimal. What is important is that you select a good brand and that they are installed by a licensed, reputable and experienced installer who offers supportive after sales service.

Make sure to ask as many questions as you need to so that you feel comfortable about your decision. With a collective 20 years experience in solar, we will guide you through every step in the process.
